Volunteers drum up a record

A cacophany of drumbeats filled the air at Dhoby Ghaut yesterday morning as 1,380 grassroots volunteers took part in a record-setting mass percussion performance.

Among those who beat hand drums, shook shakers and rapped wood blocks to the song We Will Get There, popularised by Singapore singer Stefanie Sun, were Girl Guides, senior citizens, students and professional drummers.

The event, organised by the Dairy Farm Group, entered the Singapore Book of Records for the most participants in a mass percussion activity.

Dairy Farm, one of Singapore's largest retailers, owns the Cold Storage, Shop N Save and 7-Eleven chains, among others.

The event also saw the group donating 20,000kg of rice to the Care Community Services Society, which will be distributed to 4,000 needy families.

The group also intends to raise $500,000, including the rice donation of about $30,000, for the society from now until the middle of next year.

A charity golf tournament held last month has already raised half that sum.

The remaining $220,000 will be collected through donations from the public, who can place their donations in collection boxes at the group's more than 750 retail outlets.

Yesterday's event also saw the completion of 201,000 pledges of commitment to racial harmony collected by OnePeople.sg, a governmental organisation that promotes racial harmony.

The final pledge was given by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, who was the guest of honour at the event.
